Dr. Syed Shoaib Shah  is a world-renowned forensic expert, behavior geneticist and one of the top medical educationists of the country. Presently he is working as Professor of Public Health Law at Health Services Academy (HSA), Islamabad, the country’s first degree awarding Institute (DAI) of Public Health placed under Government of Pakistan's Ministry of National Health Services Regulations and Coordination (MoNHSR&C)

Dr Shah is a graduate of Nishtar Medical College, Multan, Pakistan, and holds a PhD in human genetics & molecular medicine and is the first Pakistani to be a board certified by American College of Forensic Examiners International, ACFEI in Forensic Medicine. He is also a certified forensic consultant (CFC) from ACFEI.  

 

After completing diplomat in Medical Jurisprudence(DMJ), in 1985, he joined the department of forensic medicine as a lecturer, at King Edward Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan. The department is known to offer the best medico legal services to the public. During his stay there, he conducted about 500 autopsies, a number of exhumations and issued hundreds of medico legal  certificates. These figures speak of his acquired expertise in the field of Forensic Medicine. He possesses a distinct credential of a qualified forensic pathologist after doing MPhil in Histopathology in 1996.

Over a career spanning around 40 years, in both public & private sector institutions of repute in different positions, has been serving as Professor in the field of forensic medicine for last two decades. As Principal Shifa College of Medicine and International Hospital he was responsible for introducing critical reforms in medical education, including rationalization of medical jurisprudence in integrated curriculum. As Dean Islamabad Medical and Dental College reinvigorated the clinical teaching by introducing legal aspects of medical practice especially medico legal certification to students .

He has been serving as a teacher, trainer, and expert witness in forensic field and his expertise has been utilized to consult on numerous high profile cases. His vast experience as an expert medical witness in criminal trials and appeals has earned him a respectable name. He is known as an honest, truthful and credible person in forensic fraternity. He has spent his whole life in the search of truth because he believes that “truth is the essence of life.”  He continued to be an energetic idol of the overweening value of Forensic Science to the justice system. Dr Shah is rated high by the students and peers as superb teacher both in spoken and the printed word.

His Doctoral thesis entitled “DNA variations associated with aggressive behavior in Pakistani individuals: A forensic analysis” has been a landmark study in the field of human behavior genetics. His work on “The association of Monoamine Oxidase A (MAOA) gene polymorphisms and self-reported aggressive behavior in a Pakistani ethnic group.” has been extensively cited by researchers.

Dr. Shah, based on his credentials and practical experience in the field of medicine, represented Pakistan as an invited speaker in various international forums in USA, UK, Europe and Asia to share his views and expertise on curriculum reforms and status of forensic medicine in the country.

A brand new department of public health law at Health Services Academy is his latest endeavor and he visions to introduce modular learning pathway for medical and allied health professionals, legal fraternity, law enforcement organizations, public servants and associated professionals.
